God Complex: Abdul Quayyum Khan Kundi

A god complex is an unshakable belief characterized by consistently inflated feelings of personal ability, privilege, or infallibility. Such a person will usually refuse to admit and may even deny the possibility of their errors or failures, even in the face of complex or evident problems of impossible tasks (source Wikipedia). Pakistani politicians and generals have been inflicted with this disease since independence. But now, the situation has reached its zenith.

During my eight years stint with PTI, I repeatedly warned that the party is suffering from a God Complex. Not just Imran Khan, almost all of those around him have this complex including Dr. Arif Alvi, Asad Umar, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, and many others. Analyze their actions and statements. All of it confirms the existence of a God Complex. I and some others suggested corrective measures to control this sentiment. We were worried that this God Complex can cause a lot of damage to the country in terms of economy, social fabric, and foreign policy. After three years, the results are in front of you. The economy is in dire straits, institutions are damaged, parliament is nonfunctional, people are frustrated, foreign policy has completely collapsed, and war dangers are lurking on all our borders.

This situation is not limited to the ruling party alone, other political parties PMLN and PPP also have a similar tendency but are not as pronounced as PTI. Bhutto is still alive and driving policies of PPP. No one can question the decisions of Mr. Zardari and Bilawal. The central body decisions are thrown out the window when Mr. Zardari steps in. Nawaz Sharif is now called the ideology of PMLN, without explaining what it means for a person to be called that. Maryam Nawaz Sharif even proposed that he should be made the Imam of the party and nation. These parties do not have the capability or skills to solve the issues of this country. Playing musical chairs with these three confused political parties, in every election cycle, is not a solution but a problem this country has to solve.

The issue would not have been so serious if this God Complex was limited to politicians only. Most state institutions are now led by people inflicted by it. Analyze the actions of the NAB chairman, Army Chief, and some Chief Justices. They all acted indispensable, free of errors and faults. NAB has failed to contain corruption but claims big success. Chief justices issue orders that do not meet the constitutional standards, but no one can question it for fear of contempt of court. The Army Chief considers himself savior in chief that has to play a role in politics, economy, and foreign affairs.

To protect their domain, these incapable but entitled individuals, inflicted with a God Complex, also try to make the nation drink the opium to believe that we are the best nation in the world and there is nothing to worry about. But no proof is shown to prove that we are the best and succeeding. We earned zero medals in Olympics games. We have very few international patents registered. We do not have a single brand that can be considered global. Our universities are lagging in research. Our religious institutions are failing to understand and educate the nation about the message of Islam. Our economy is less than the economy of one company Apple or Samsung. But we are still made to believe otherwise inducing a national God Complex.

It is an unsustainable situation. The system has to be reformed and normalized where performance is appreciated, and failures are penalized. A system where the Prime Minister leads a cabinet of peers rather than a master-slave combination. If we fail to achieve normalization, we are doomed to fail as a nation and disintegrate. The window of opportunity is small, we need to act now and initiate national political dialogue through our proposed Round table conference.
